Paul Carrack is one of smoothest voices to come out of the 80’s. He sang for Squeeze (see “Tempted”) and also for Mike + The Mechanics (see “Silent Running” and “Living Years”) and he also keyboards for The Smiths and The Pretenders as well. He could sing a phone book and I’d listen to it.
This song peaked at #9 in early ‘88 and has one of the best lyrics ever, in any song:
A slim chance in tight pants is what you are…
That’s such a good line that I used it on a girl when I was a sophomore in college. Left her speechless. I’m not really sure she knew what I meant but I got to say it out loud and that’s all that counts. Truth is…a lot of the lines in this song could have applied to her but that’s a story for another day.
